The Path to Medicine Has Never
Been More Diverse

By the College Quest App Editorial Team · Spring 2026

The journey to becoming a doctor starts with a decision that many aspiring physicians underestimate: choosing the right undergraduate major. Every year, over 53,000 students apply to U.S. medical schools. Fewer than half will receive an acceptance letter. The path is long, competitive, and demanding — and it begins in your freshman year of college.

Contrary to popular belief, medical schools do not require a specific major. What they require are specific prerequisites, a competitive GPA, a strong MCAT score, meaningful clinical experience, and evidence of academic rigor. While there is no single "pre-med major," some undergraduate paths significantly increase your chances of medical school acceptance — and some open doors to specialties and research opportunities that others simply cannot.

In this issue, we cover the top pre-med majors, the universities that produce the most successful medical school applicants, what it really costs to become a doctor from undergraduate through residency, and exactly what you need to get in. If medicine is your goal, this is your roadmap.
