What Is CIP โ and Why Does It Matter?
The Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) is the U.S. Department of Education's standardized taxonomy for describing academic programs offered at postsecondary institutions. Originally developed in 1980 and most recently updated in 2020, CIP assigns every degree program a hierarchical numeric code โ a two-digit family number, then a four-digit code within that family โ ensuring consistent reporting across thousands of colleges and federal databases like IPEDS.
Why does it matter to you as a student? Because CIP codes are the backbone of labor-market data. The Bureau of Labor Statistics, the National Center for Education Statistics, and virtually every salary research tool map earnings and employment outcomes back to CIP codes. Understanding which CIP family your prospective major belongs to helps you compare programs across schools apples-to-apples, decode federal financial aid data, and spot emerging fields that institutions may label differently but share the same CIP code.
This guide covers all 269 programs organized across 37 two-digit CIP families from the CIP 2020 taxonomy. For each program you'll see the official CIP 4-digit code, the program name, and a one-sentence description of what students actually study. Use the Table of Contents or the search bar above to jump directly to any family or program.
